The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the actions of police in Coventry following the death of a man in custody.
The IPCC says Mark Yafai, 27, from Birmingham, was found by staff to be “unwell” in a cell at Coventry central police station in Little Park Street at around 6am on last Wednesday, July 1.
He was later transferred to hospital, where he sadly died.
IPCC investigators were deployed to the post-incident procedures following a mandatory referral from West Midlands Police. The IPCC is in the process of reviewing CCTV from the custody suite and hospital.
It will also seek to interview custody and medical staff.
IPCC commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “The IPCC investigator has made contact with Mr Yafai’s family and my thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“Any death in custody is a tragedy, and we have begun an independent investigation to establish exactly what happened.”
