Tony Mowbray keeping tabs on Ruben Lameiras after Nuneaton stalemate

THE JURY is still out for trialist Ruben Lameiras who impressed Sky Blues boss Tony Mowbray during Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Nuneaton at Liberty Way.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was one of two trialists used by Mowbray during the club’s first pre-season friendly.

Lameiras, who left Spurs in March to join Swedish side Ã…tvidabergs FF, had two efforts on goal and produced an all-round impressive performance.

Mowbray revealed last Friday that he is still keen to bring in another striker as well as two attacking midfielders.

And the City boss wants to see more of the 20-year-old at the club’s Ryton training this week before making a decision over his future.

“He’s got a good pedrigree,” said Mowbray. “He’s been a Tottenham Hotspur and you can tell he has got natural ability and a bit of flair.

“I like his positive play and he’s definitely worth keeping in the building and continuing to have a look at him.

“It was good for us, a good work-out. There were lots of positive things for us to take from the game.

“It was a mixed bag for us with the experienced players, young lads and new signings all coming on and the first game can always catch you out.”

Teenager James Maddison had the best chance of the match with a free kick which struck the bar while fellow academy graduate Ivor Lawton forced Max Fondop in what was a fairly quiet second period.

Mowbray reserved special praise for midfielder John Fleck and wants the former Rangers man to create an understand with recent signings Romain Vincelot.

He added: “Fleck is an important player for this club. I knew the name before I came but probably didn’t realise just how talented he is.

“I want him to grow next season and become a really influential player for us. Romain also did very well when he come on.

“He brings an energy and a knowledge to our midfield and my hope is that the more games we play, them two can develop an understanding.”
