COVENTRY ended a run of three straight defeats in National One thanks to a convincing 38-0 win at home to Blaydon.
The smiles returned back to the faces of the Coventry fans at the Butts Park Arena on Saturday after watching their side produce one of their best performances in 2015 and they will now be hoping the club can kick-start as season which had dipped in recent weeks.
It had taken stern defence though to keep Blaydon at bay before half time. Resolute and solid tackling frustrated the visitors who never really came close to scoring despite enjoying lots of possession.
And having held all the Northerners could throw at them, Coventry had Matt Jones to thanks for kicking three successful penalties to give the home side a 9-0 lead at the break.
And when the players returned for the second half Coventry really did turn on the style with four well-worked tries to secure a much-needed bonus point.
A fourth Jones penalty added more points, before on 52 minutes some excellent driving play from the forwards saw skipper Wayne Evans in the right place to gain the first try which Jones converted.
Some effective play on the left sent Gaston Mieres over for his maiden try for Coventry and the number 15 then played a major part in the set up to Dom Lespierre’s third try of the season eight minutes later.
There was still time for the forwards to enjoy another major moment when a fine driving maul from a line out allowed replacement Devlin Hope to claim the fourth try and a bonus point.
And with Matt Jones succeeding with all three conversions, the Welsh international finished with 18 personal points and his Coventry side were well and truly out of sight.
Jacques Le Roux produced by far his best overall performance in a long time, and his back row partners Sam Pailor and George Oliver being not too far behind.
The squad can certainly travel now to the tricky venue of Cinderford in much greater heart.
