COVENTRY Blaze made a welcome return to winning ways on Sunday evening when they beat Braehead Clan 6-3 at the Skydome in the Elite League.
Chuck Weber’s side had lost their previous five matches in all competitions and their latest defeat had come at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday where Blaze fell to a 4-0 loss at the National Ice Centre.
Speaking after the defeat, coach Weber felt his side were not winning enought one-on-one battles.
But Blaze bounced back the following evening inside the Skydome with Jim Jordensen and Brett Robinson both bagging a brace.
The hosts made a flying start and took the lead with just 20 seconds gone when Jorgensen scored his first goal of the season and Robinson scored another in the sixth minute.
Powerplay markers from Alex Leavitt and Thomas Nesbitt ensured the game was all square at the end of the first period but middle-session strikes from Robinson and Mike Quesnele helped Blaze regain their two-goal cushion.
Blaze’s Jordan Pietrus and Chris Bruton traded final-period goals before the Clan scorer was ejected for slashing five minutes from time.
Man of the match Jorgensen then rounded off the scoring with his second on 56 minutes as Blaze snapped a five-game losing streak to the relief of coach Weber.
“It is always nice to win,” said Weber. “I loved their spirit, I challenged the guys to play with enthusiasm and they did that.
“A number of guys would say they were not at their best in Nottingham but to bounce back the way they did showed a lot about their character.
“I changed the lines and Pietrus, (Ned) Lukacevic and (Drew) Fisher were really good in the offensive zone.
“Robinson, (Ashley) Tait and (Ross) Venus and (Neil) Trimm, (Carl) Lauzon and (Cale)] Tanaka also played well in both ends.
“(Brian Stewart) Stewie has also been through a lot of adversity this year but he made some big saves for us too.”
