COVENTRY Council has been recognised for its commitment to green and sustainable living
Coventry City Council is celebrating after being presented with an award for Environmental Best Practice at The Green Apple Awards at the Houses of Parliament.
The Council beat off more than 500 other nominations to take home the Gold Award in recognition of the city’s Green Champions programme and Think Low Carbon (TLC) campaigns.
The Green Champions programme sees more than 100 members of Council staff volunteer to lead by example – persuading colleagues to encourage recycling and reduce their energy, water and waste.
It is believed each Green Champion saves the Council £625 per year by ensuring lights and computers are turned off and recycling at least 70 per cent of their office waste.
Overall, their actions save the Council an estimated £25,000 per year on its waste bill.
Commenting on the award, cabinet member for business, enterprise and employment, Coun Kevin Maton said it demonstrated Coventry’s commitment to environmental awareness.
He added: “Coventry truly is leading the way in low carbon practices in businesses and development.”
