SKY Blues’ fans and the public are being urged to turn out in their thousands to join in a celebration outside Coventry Cathedral of footballing legend Jimmy Hill – and spot celebrities.

Organisers of Friday’s cathedral service (starting at 5.30pm, seating by 5.15pm) want as many as possible to arrive early in adjacent University Square, and wear Sky Blue.

England manager Roy Hodgson is the latest to be added to a star-studded list of stars attending from the world of football and broadcasting.

Many fans snapped up free tickets for inside the cathedral, but all those who missed out are encouraged to still be part of the event.

The service will be audio broadcast live in University Square.

The crowd will witness a star-studded line up arriving and entering the cathedal for the celebration of the former Coventry City manager and chairman and ex-BBC Match of the Day presenter, who died in December aged 87.

Speakers will include BBC commentator John Motson, former Coventry City manager and player Bobby Gould, former Professional Footballers’ Association chairman Gordon Taylor, current CCFC executive Chris Anderson, Jimmy’s son Jamie Hill, and former Sky Blues chairman and life president Joe Elliott, who has helped organise the event.

Other famous attendees are expected to include Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker, Mr Hodgson, Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, and BBC pundits and former Liverpool legends Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson.

A statement released today states: “Fans and Coventrians are encouraged to come along and share in what will undoubtedly be a special atmosphere to pay tribute to Jimmy Hill.

“People are encouraged to wear Sky Blue and to be in University Square early with a high number of Sky Blues’ fans and Coventrians coming along to share in the event and the chance to see many famous familiar Coventry City stars and footballing personalities as they arrive.”

Among Sky Blues legends expected to attend are FA Cup winning captain Brian Kilcline, and many more.
