COVENTRY students who tackled a water recycling challenge have devised their own water harvesting system.

In total 104 year seven students at Grace Academy Coventry tackled the task under the watchful eye of a sustainability team from Mitie – an energy company.

The project was ran in a bid to create clearer links between business and the curriculum, attracting a more diverse workforce in science, technology, engineering and maths.

As part of the ground-breaking four-week scheme students were asked to design, cost, build and sell their chosen recycling system, within strict budget guidelines, to help Grace Academy’s head office in Coleshill reduce its water bills and make a positive impact on the environment.

The project helped to demonstrate how the students’ maths skills could be applied to create real world business solutions, offering vital experience to help improve their employability and inspire them to achieve higher grades in maths and science.

Student Megan Rowstron said: “It’s not all about winning and having fun, we’ve learned a lot.

“It also makes us confident in ourselves, as we spoke and presented in front of important people who are experts in their company.”
