A THIRD win of the season against Bath has pushed Wasps up to third in the Aviva Premiership, but the club’s director of rugby Dai Young is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
Wasps held a narrow 8-6 lead at the midway point during their game at Bath on Saturday with Elliot Daly scoring a 45-metre penalty and Frank Halai powered through to score his sixth Premiership try of the season.
A Ruaridh Jackson penalty followed by a second try of the match by Halai and another score by Simon McIntyre put Wasps in control at 21-6.
Bath made the most of a man advantage after Thomas Young was sin-binned by cutting the deficit to eight points but a Jimmy Gopperth penalty ten minutes from time have the visitors breathing space.
And a late Bath try proved to be little more than a consolation as Wasps celebrated a 24-18 victory at the final whistle.
“We’ve had two good wins and gone from ninth to third,” said Young. “And what I’ve said to the players is two defeats will take us from third back to ninth just as quickly.
“Obviously we’ve got momentum and we’ve got a bit of belief and confidence within the squad which is good.
“What we’ve got to do now is keep winning to keep the momentum going and although a lot of people are talking about top four, we’ll only do that in the last month if we’ve got a chance of being there.
“Our target for the season is to be a consistent top six team, as we have only been there once in seven or eight years.
“We want to be at the top table in Europe, so the target is top six, but if we can get to the last month of the season with a chance, we will give it a real crack.”
