POLICE OFFICERS in Coventry are appealing for witnesses and information about a 90-year-old man that was targeted by a callous crook.
The elderly man, who lives alone at a house in Winsford Avenue, discovered a man in his property at approximately 6pm on Friday (February 19).
When the intruder was challenged, he stated that he had followed a group of thieving youths into the property and warned them off.
Believing the intruder to be a guardian angel, the man went to check that his money was safe – as the suspect switched the front door key for a dummy key.
Later that evening, someone returned to the unlocked property and stole £200 from where the victim had been checked.
The suspect has been described as a white man aged between 40 and 45, around 5ft 9ins tall, muscular and stocky – he was clean shaven and spoke with a local accent.
PC Rich Hobbs who is investigating the crime said: “A 90 year old man has been deliberately targeted due to his vulnerability in this heartless crime.
“There are a number of shops and bus stops nearby.
“I am asking for anyone who was in the area at that time to think about what they saw and report anything at all, however innocuous it may seem.”
