COVENTRY has had its say and voted to leave the European Union in the nationwide referendum.
More than 153,000 city residents turned up at polling stations yesterday, or sent in their postal votes – with 55.5 per cent voting for Britain to cut its ties with our European neighbours.
The count went on til the early hours at the Ricoh Arena, with the final tally seeing 85,097 votes in the city registered for Leave and 67,967 for Remain.
Voter turnout was 69.21 percent – higher than usually registered in general election – proving Coventrians were keen to have their say in what will prove to be a historic vote.
Early exit polls had given a narrow victory for the Remain camp, but as the evening wore on it became clear it was actually Leave that had clinched the victory.
Across the Midlands, 30 areas voted Leave, with three – Cheltenham, Cotswold and Warwick – backing Remain.
