Council Leader hopeful new lease can be agreed to save Coventry Stadium following positive talks

THE LEADER of Rugby Borough Council has confirmed positive talks are still taking place regarding the future of motorsport at Coventry Stadium in an encouraging statement posted online.

Writing on the Save Coventry Speedway Facebook page, Coun Michael Stokes said he was hopeful an agreement can be reached in the next two weeks.

Confirmation of a new lease in the coming weeks will allow time for Coventry Bees promoter Mick Horton, and Stock Car promoter Dave Carter, to plan fixtures for the 2017 season.

The current lease to race speedway and stock cars at the stadium ends in December, a new lease must be agreed else both Coventry Bees and Coventry Stock Cars will be homeless next season – even though the stadium will most likely remain standing.

The positive statement from Coun Stokes, which was posted online on Friday (July 1), said: “I’m aware that at the last public I said I was hopeful to be able to make public the conclusion of talks with the new owners of the Coventry Stadium site before the end of June.

“Though no fault of any party, talks are still ongoing.

“I am pleased to confirm the owners are still engaging in a positive way.

“I hope to be able to make the conclusions public within the next two weeks.”
