COVENTRY City Council’s Lord Mayor is inviting members of the public to attend a special service to remember the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

Led by Reverend Kathryn Fleming and Bruce Kent, the service will begin by the statute of Peace and Reconciliation in the Cathedral Ruins.

The service will feature stories from Hiroshima victims, a drama performance and a message of greetings from the Mayor of Hiroshima to the Lord Mayor of Coventry, read by Mr Katsumi Takahashi of Coventry Hiroshima Friendship Group.

The Lord Mayor will then read his reply.

The Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom will also be present for the service.

Coun Lindsley Harvard said: “It’s so important that we continue to mark the occasion of Hiroshima Day and remember all those who died and suffered, there and in Nagasaki, then and since.

“Coventry must always honour anniversaries such as Hiroshima Day, and play a prominent role in promoting peace and understanding.”

The Hiroshima Day service takes place on Saturday (August 6) at 2pm at Coventry Cathedral.
