Alvis Sporting hit four past Barnt Green Spartak to return to the top of the league

FOOTBALL: ALVIS Sporting returned to the goal trail on Saturday as they shot themselves back to the top of the Midland League Division Two table thanks to a convincing 4-0 victory over Barnt Green Spartak on Saturday.

From the outset, Dildale Linton was causing problems to the Barnt Green Spartak rearguard at Green Lane and in the 20th minute he gave Alvis the lead when he latched onto a through ball from Dean Kimberlin to net from eight yards out.

Alvis continued on the offensive playing attractive football, and just before the break Rickie Cutting was bundled over on the byline, and captain, Michael Quirke despatched the resultant penalty into the top corner of the net to increase the Alvis lead.

In the second half the home side continued to be the more enterprising side and in the 56th minute a linesman drew the attention of the referee to an infringement in a crowded Barnt Green goalmouth, and Linton stepped up to score his second goal of the game from the penalty spot.

In the final minute Martin Gormley set off on a mazy run before shooting, and though the Barnt Green keeper partially saved the ball, the momentum of the shot found its way into the net.

Alvis manager, Damian Cassidy, said “This was a cracker of a game against useful opponents. It was one of our better performances of the season.

“It was a very good team display, and they worked hard throughout the match. It was also good to see that the changes that were made paid dividends.”

This Saturday Alvis Sporting travel to A.E.I Rugby in the Second Round of the Coventry Charity Cup (1.30pm).
