A COVENTRY woman’s work around dementia has been recognised at the annual University of Worcester’s Hennell Award.

Michelle Brown, a dementia navigator for Alzheimer’s Society, completed her foundation degree at the university and her latest work has been deemed ‘highly commended’.

Launched in memory of the late Brian Hennell, the Hennell Award for Innovation and Excellence in Dementia Care was sponsored by June Hennell MBE.

The award recognises people who have made a significant contribution to promoting excellent practice in dementia care.

Michelle Brown said: “It is hugely satisfying to know we are now reaching people with dementia and their carers who would not otherwise be engaging with services.

“I’m proud to have the work recognised by receiving a high commendation from the Hennell Award.”

Michelle focused on a trial to bridge the gaps around local support services on offer to people with a diagnosis of dementia and service users knowing about the post diagnosis support available locally.

The trial ‘GP Pop Up Clinic’ undertaken at a local GP surgery, has led to a one year pilot being commissioned to explore further the benefits of collaborative working within a community setting.

Tony Refson, services manager for Alzheimer’s Society said: “Michelle is passionate about supporting people to live well with dementia.

“Her commitment to her foundation degree mirrors her commitment to her role as dementia navigator across Coventry.”
