A year 6 trip took us on a visit to the Somme
Where sadness and respect took over each and everyone
The thought of the war in those 5 terrible years
Took so many lives and brought so many tears
Weapons and barbed wire were found underground
Trenches and memories scattered around
Soldiers fought and risked their lives
With guns in hand and pocket knives
We followed our guide down into the trench
No seating was there, not even a bench
How long did they stand in these deep dark holes
I can only imagine, they must have felt like moles
We are the lucky ones, we get to go home
Leaving behind the memories on stone
Where fighting once happened poppies grow high
In memory of soldier where once they did lie
