FIRE crews were called out to a block of flats in Coventry this morning after a blaze broke out on the fourth floor of a ten storey building.

Rescue services received a 999 call at 5.18am to reports of a fire within a flat on Bath Street near the city centre.

Seven fire engines attended the scene along with 35 firefighters from the local area.

No one has been arrested and West Midlands Police now has no involvement with the investigation as to what caused the fire.

People living in the surrounding were evacuated from their homes while one person was treated by West Midlands Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “The flat has suffered 80 per cent fire damage and no other flat has suffered from significant damage.

“We received the stop message at 9.46am after fans were used to clear the smoke and thermal image cameras checked for hotspots.

“Six fire fighters had to use breathing apparatus while we used one main hose jet and one safety jet to put out the fire.”

A spokesperson from the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We treated one patient for smoke inhalation.

“We were stood down at 7.30am after receiving a call from the fire service to attend the scene at 5.20am.”
