Avid sailor Vic Stuthridge to be presented with top RYA award

SAILING: VIC Stuthridge will be presented with one of the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) most prestigious awards in recognition of his commitment to the Balsall Common-based Heart of England Offshore Cruising Association (HOEOCA).

Stuthridge received a Lifetime Commitment Award at the RYA’s annual awards ceremony in London for his exceptional commitment and dedication to the club for over 15 years.

He co-founded HOEOCA in 1993 with the aim to promote, encourage and provide opportunities for people who live primarily in the West Midlands to get involved in all forms of offshore sailing (cruising and racing).

After terms as HOEOCA Vice Commodore, and then Commodore for three years, Stuthridge started teaching RYA shore-based and VHF radio courses at local schools, a role he continues today.

He promotes HOEOCA whilst instructing and encouraging course students to join the club as a way to use their qualifications, continue to improve their sailing skills and knowledge and enjoy the club’s social activities.

Stuthridge is now seen as a ‘father figure’ at the club, providing advice and assistance to people new to sailing and he also keeps a careful eye on its direction and organises an annual meeting of ex- and current Commodores, ensuring HOEOCA remains vibrant, active and true to its roots.

Stuthridge was nominated for his award by his club and selected as a winner by the RYA Honours and Awards Panel.
