Surviving Winter campaign will help Coventry's vulnerable

Coventry Editorial 2nd Dec, 2016   0

VULNERABLE city people are being given a helping hand this winter, thanks to a charity appeal.

Coventry people affected by homelessness, food poverty and social isolation are set to benefit from the Heart of England Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter campaign.

The campaign was launched by the Foundation, which which awards funding across Coventry, Solihull, Warwickshire, Birmingham and the Black Country, at the city’s Holy Trinity Church in Coventry where it will host its annual carol service on December 14.

The Foundation is now asking business across the region and those who are able to give up all or some of their Winter Fuel Allowance to donate to the scheme.

People are also being asked to host fundraisers such as bake sales, quizzes and raffles over the Christmas period to show their support.

Tina Costello, CEO of the Heart of England Community Foundation, said: “Winter is one of the hardest times of the year for vulnerable people, and the Surviving Winter appeal goes a long way in supporting those who need it most.

“The causes we have chosen to support help thousands of people from across the area.

“In the West Midlands it is estimated that 60,000 older people live in social isolation, more than 103,000 emergency food parcels were requested in the last year and the number of rough sleepers has increased 37 per cent since 2010.

“These statistics demonstrate how vital the Surviving Winter appeal is, and the funds raised will go to organisations at the forefront of tackling these issues.

“It is also excellent that the funds raised at our Christmas carol concert will go towards the campaign and we look forward to welcoming people to enjoy an evening of carols followed by a wine and canapé reception at Coventry University’s Square One.”

The money raised for Surviving Winter will fund grassroots community projects supporting the homeless, rough sleepers, isolated older people and those affected by food poverty.

Since launching in 2011, the campaign has supported more than 80,000 people through the winter months.
