FOOTBALL: STRIKER George Thomas says the Sky Blues will be keeping their feet firmly on the ground despite booking their place in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy final at Wembley.
The Sky Blues are in with a chance of winning their first piece of silverware since famously lifting the FA Cup back in 1987.
Now 30 years on Russell Slade’s side have a chance of making history themselves after beating Wycombe 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday night.
“We got there in the end and did the job,” said 19-year-old Thomas, who scored City’s second of the night with a well struck volley.
“The crowd were great all game, it’s always better when we have a loud crowd, cheering you on. Especially in the second-half when they got on top, it really does help you.
“It was a lively start, we knew they were going to come at us and when we saw Akinfenwa come on, we knew it was going to be physical, but the defenders and midfielders defended well.
“We’ll enjoy it, but when we come back on Thursday we’ll look ahead to Saturday because that is a hugely important game for us and we need to make sure we get the three points and start climbing that table.”
Thomas was on-hand to score the second goal of the night with an unforgettable volley while Stuart Beavon bagged the first from a similar position to cancel out Adebayo Akinfenwa’s second half strike.
It was Thomas’s third goal of the season in all competitions but the young Welsh striker was quick to praise the assist by Kyel Reid.
He added: “Credit to Kyel Reid because it was an unbelievable ball, it was a joke of a ball. I have seen their left back go for it, skim his head and land to me. I’ve took it on my chest and just tried to get it on target, and it’s gone in.
“I’m still 19-years old so personally to be able to have the chance to play at Wembley is a really good achievement. It is huge for the club as well, it is what we need at the moment to build a bit of belief.
“It was a great game, a big game. It is a chance to get to Wembley so all the lads were excited, but a little bit nervous as well. We knew there would be a lot of fans there so we didn’t want to let them down.”
