COVENTRY City fans and others are being urged the run the Coventry Half Marathon as a #RunForJimmy Hill campaign.
Money raised will go to the Jimmy Hill Legacy Fund which supports disadvantaged youngsters, more than a year after the Sky Blue legend’s death.
Anyone who does the #RunForJimmy on Sunday, March 19 will get two free tickets to a CCFC home league game this season.
The 13.1 mile Half Marathon will start and finish at the Coventry Transport Museum. Runners will go through the city centre, Radford and Allesley.
A team of a dozen or so Sky Blues in the Community and Coventry City staff will be running for the cause.
Named in honour of the talismanic former manager and chairman who died in December 2015, the Legacy Fund aims to raise charitable funds administered by the registered charity ‘Sky Blues in the Community’, run by former club defender Dave Busst.
He said: “At Sky Blues in the Community, we have a dedicated team of employees that work hard to make a difference to the lives of people across Coventry and Warwickshire every day.
“I’m proud to say that some of this team will be taking on the challenge of the Coventry Half Marathon and raising money for a meaningful cause. We’re looking forward to the event in March and hope people will show us their support”.
Coventry city councillor Abdul Khan, cabinet member for events, added: “The Coventry Half Marathon is a great community event which brings lots of people together to showcase what a great city we are.
“In terms of actual event numbers, obviously we’re very keen to have as many people as possible taking part on the day, so it’s pleasing to hear that the Sky Blues in the Community team are running on the day and raising money for their Jimmy Hill Legacy Fund.
“I wish them all the best in their fund-raising efforts and look forward to seeing them on the race day.”
Legacy Fund donations help provide activities and footballing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities; and children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It also provides grant awards to local charities and community organisations, and supports activities on matchdays in the Sky Blues Family Zone at the Ricoh Arena, run by volunteers.
The scheme says it aims to “provide opportunities to improve the quality of life for those who need it most in memory of the late Jimmy Hill OBE… supporting a number of causes that were close to his heart.”
