Coventry City’s ‘Sky Blues in the Community’ scheme is helping to launch a new programme to identify talented footballing youngsters with disabilities in the city.

The new Disability Talent Identification Programme is open to players with a range of special needs including learning disabilities.

Working alongside The FA, Sky Blues in the Community is seeking to identify young players deemed to have higher levels of ability.

The programme is open to male and female players with Cerebral Palsy, and people who are blind or partially sighted, deaf, have learning difficulties or who are amputees.

Those selected who then go into a developmental programme designed to produce football excellence in conjunction with personal development.

The first event for the programme kicks off with the SBitC hosted FA England Talent Day at the Moat House Leisure Centre on Friday March 24, from 4pm to 6:30pm.

An SBitC spokesman said: “On the day, players aged 12-16 years old will take part in a number of drills and small-sided games whilst being carefully observed and assessed by FA coaches and scouts.

“Outstanding performers will progress through the FA Disability Talent Pathway.

“The Pathway comprises of FA Disability Talent Identification Programmes, FA Regional Impairment Specific Centres of Excellence and FA England Impairment Specific Development Squads – with the ultimate goal of developing players to represent the England Elite Impairment Specific Squads in European and World Competitions.
