HEADTEACHERS in Coventry are calling on parents and carers to support their fight for fairer funding across the city’s schools.
In a powerful and emotional letter, headteachers said children’s education is at risk and warned of an ‘unprecedented crisis’ in schools – caused by a lack of investment.
Signed by the chairs of the primary, secondary and special partnerships of schools, the letter focuses on what they claim to be the inequalities of the government’s new national funding formula – which hit Coventry’s schools hard.
Coventry secondary schools will be £112,000 worse off by 2020, and primary schools by £34,000.
The letter reads:
‘Education is an investment in our future.
The lack of specific investment in our schools and the impact of rising costs are creating an unprecedented crisis.
Your children’s education is at risk.
The cuts required will mean losing valuable teachers and teaching assistants, classroom resources, opportunities for trips and after school activity and key workers such as school crossing patrols.’
Parents and carers are being asked to support their children’s education by writing to their MP and the of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, to share their concerns on the lack of investment of Coventry pupils’ education.
An online petition has also been set up calling for the national funding formula to be reconsidered.
The government claims to have protected funding for schools.
