Corps of Drums set £20,000 fundraising target to purchase coach

A FUNDRAISING target of £20,000 has been set by the Coventry of Coventry Corps of Drums to help purchase a more reliable coach.

Formed in 1947, the Corps has become one of the most famous and respected youth marching bands in the country, meaning this year marks the group’s 70th anniversary.

To help raise the cash, members have decided to take part in the Coventry Walkathon on Sunday, May 14, around the War Memorial Park.

Not only will they be taking part in the Walkathon, they will be marching and playing in full uniform.

Four years ago, the Corps purchased their current vehicle.

However the £6,000 budget allowed them to purchase a 52 seater coach which required constant repair.

Over the years, the Corps has performed all over the UK and toured overseas to Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxemburg, Switzerland, France and Norway.

In 1983, the group became the first non-American corps to march in the prestigious Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

More recently, they performed in the July 4th celebration in Delaware USA.

The Corps consists of young men aged eight or older, and last year members had the honour of playing for all the senior members of the Royal Family including Her Majesty the Queen.

The instrumentation consists of a full chromatic range of American sourced G bugles and a percussion section of drums and tuned percussion.
