A Jaguar driver is to stand trial accused of causing the death of a 57-year-old man who died three days after being knocked down as he was crossing the road.

Steven Russell (41) of The Gateway, Adelaide Street, Coventry, pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Robert Morris on December 20 last year by dangerous driving.

The charge follows a tragic incident three days earlier at around 11.30pm on December 17 near the Red Lion pub in Ansty Road, Coventry.

Mr Morris was hit by Russell’s silver Jaguar X-type which was said to have been travelling along the dual carriageway away from the city centre.

Russell stopped at the scene and Mr Morris, described as a husband and father, was rushed by ambulance to nearby University Hospital where he died despite the efforts of medical staff.

After Russell had entered his plea, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC observed that an issue in the trial would be whether it was texting that had led to the accident.

Judge Lockhart adjourned the case for trial, which is expected to last for four days, and Russell was granted bail.
