SAVE OUR BEES: Stadium owners to argue their involvement in Council's five-year development plan

Coventry Editorial 26th Sep, 2017   0

THE OWNERS of Coventry Stadium, the former home of the Coventry Bees speedway team, will argue at a public examination that they should be included in the council’s five-year redevelopment plan.

Brandon Estates Ltd plan to build 250 homes on the currently empty site which currently sits on greenbelt land.

The move – if successful – would end decades of sporting heritage in Coventry, dating back to 1928 when the Bees raced their first ever meeting.

The submission, made to Rugby Borough Council, states: “The use of Brandon Stadium for the purposes of speedway is not a viable use of the site. A continuing use of the stadium for speedway is not deliverable.”

The submission also requests that the Council does not allow the proposed allocation of 1500 new dwellings in a new village to the east of Dunchurch named Lodge Farm.

It reads: “The geographical location of Lodge Farm will promote unnecessarily lengthy journeys to ‘high order ‘ services within Rugby including the provision of secondary education, contrary to the aims and objectives for achieving sustainable patterns of development.

“The Local Plan should promote a more sustainable pattern of development – deleting Lodge Farm and redistributing the growth in locations that are better related to existing settlements, including the site of Brandon Stadium.”

Meanwhile supporters of the Coventry Bees can continue to support our campaign efforts to bring the world-famous club back to the tapes by joining us to complete a public survey this Sunday, October 1.

Fans are invited to arrive outside the main entrance to the stadium at 12.30pm where a survey will aim to find out how residents feel about the possibility of having hundreds of new homes on their doorstep.

Similar to our gathering outside the stadium in March, we will meet outside the stadium’s main entrance.

Our survey will take place from 12.30pm until 2.30pm – though fans are invited to show their face in support of our campaign from midday.
