Coventry remembers those who served

Coventry Editorial 14th Nov, 2017   0

THOSE who made the ultimate sacrifice were in people’s thoughts across the city at the weekend.

Many stopped what they were doing at 11am on Saturday to observe a two-minute silence on Armistice Day – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” marking the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France, bringing an end to the First World War.

Hundreds turned out for the annual Remembrance Sunday service on a crisp bright autumn morning at the War Memorial Park.

The service was led by Dr Christopher Cocksworth, the Lord Bishop of Coventry, as people joined servicemen and women past and present, together with civic dignitaries including Lord Mayor Tony Skipper, to honour those who lost their lives in the service of their country, from the First World War battlefields in France to the War on Terror in Afghanistan.

Among those in attendance at the service were visitors from Kiel in Germany, who were visiting to mark the 70th anniversary of the wtinning of Coventry and the north German city.

Services and parades were also held across Warwickshire.
