TWO cars collided with a toppled tree that fell across the Kenilworth Road in Coventry.

The beech tree, thought to be around 70 feet long and 100 years old, came down in strong winds early this morning.

It fell across both lanes on the Kenilworth Road, Coventry, near the junction with The Spinney, on the approach to Gibbet Hill.

At about 6am two cars coming in opposite directions collided with the imposing trunk.

Both drivers are thought to have escaped serious injury.

The driver of the Ford is understood to be a 60 year-old man. The other car was thought to be a BMW driven by a woman.

The whole stretch of the Kenilworth Road – known as the straight mile – was closed by police until around 10.30am this morning while contractors worked to clear away the huge boughs.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson: “We were called to the junction of Kenilworth Road and Gibbet Hill Road at 6.01am this morning to reports of a tree that had fallen on a car. One ambulance attended the scene.

“We attended one patient. The injuries were not serious and they were discharged at the scene.”
