EDITOR’ COMMENT
IT’s great news that Cyrille Regis’s family and Coventry Cathedral have taken up this newspaper’s call for a memorial service to celebrate a city giant.
Coventry City’s unique and historic 1987 FA Cup win – with Cyrille among the figureheads – still passes through generations as one of the most celebrated dates in our city’s 1000-year timeline.
More than that, as this column argued a fortnight ago, the manner in which the widely respected late centre-forward tackled racism on and off the pitch, with a quiet but determined dignity, makes him a symbol of unity, peace and reconciliation – as is Coventry Cathedral.
Let’s all celebrate his ‘life and legacy’ on March 4 at 4pm.
