Investigation launched into three suspected arson cases at Coventry supermarket

A series of suspected arson cases at a Sainsbury’s store in Coventry are being investigated by West Midlands Police.

The three alleged arson attacks took place in the space of a week.

The first fire was set at the Canley store on Wednesday February 28 at around 10.30am when firelighters were ignited in an aisle; the fire was quickly extinguished and no-one was hurt.

The second happened the following morning (March 1) in the menswear section near the cafe.

The fire set the sprinkler system off which resulted in the store being evacuated and a considerable amount of damage was caused.

And the latest incident on Saturday morning (March 3) saw children’s clothes set alight.

PC Sarah Vaughn from Force CID, said: “Luckily, nobody was hurt in during any of these incidents but it is important we find out who is responsible as there is the possibility the offender could strike again.

“We are continuing to trawl through CCTV from the supermarket and have already spoken to a number of witnesses.

“I would urge anyone who has information on the arsons, or was in the store at the time and saw something suspicious, to get in touch.

“It may only be a small detail but it could prove crucial to the enquiry.”

If you have information please call police on 101 quoting log 771 1/3.
