Coventry school installs £60k 'immersive sensory classroom'

CHILDREN at a Coventry school can now improve their learning experience by making use of an ‘immersive sensory classroom’.

Frederick Bird Primary School, on Swan Lane, has designed the unconventional room to stimulate visual and interactive learning.

The new classroom has a 360 degree screen and cost over £60,000 to install.

The classroom offers additional sensory experiences created through use of smoke machines, vibrating floors and authentic smells that can be picked to match the image being projected.

The school says these rooms are of great value to children who can find the traditional school setting challenging and distracting.

James Phillips, School ICT Co-ordinator and year three teacher, was heavily involved with the installation of the classroom.

He said the benefits of the room are already clear and invited us to come and see a class in action.

He said: “The room was recently installed in order to give children more engaging and interactive learning experiences.

“Our children learn about all manner of fascinating subjects at school which can sometimes be difficult to bring to life.

“This amazing room allows us to transport the children to places such as the Egyptian pyramids or the Moon by projecting huge images and creating the appropriate temperature, smell and sound.

“Children feel so much closer to the pyramids when the image is projected around them.

“By creating these scenarios the children can have a far better understanding of what a place is like and they have been far more inspired to write as a result of using the room.

“At present the new room is without a name but we have launched a competition in school asking the children to suggest a suitably exciting name.”
