EDITOR'S COMMENT: Wasps get Coventry council civic reception, but what about Cov rugby and CCFC?

Coventry Editorial 22nd Apr, 2018 Updated: 22nd Apr, 2018   0

A civic reception at the magnificent St Mary’s Guildhall was staged by Coventry council for 150 years of Wasps rugby club, including four here.

A press release attributes words to the Lord Mayor, a supposedly apolitical post: “The sporting and community life of the city had been enhanced.”

Many may agree. But many do not, as social media proves daily.

For those people, Wasps’ presence since the council’s Ricoh Arena sale has divided the sporting community.

And there is a widespread view that the authorities still disproportionately favour the peripatetic franchise over our great Victorian institutions – the Sky Blues and Coventry rugby club.

Perhaps something lies behind the pro-Wasps PR onslaught – and we’ll keep reporting on Wasps’ financial problems.

Meanwhile, how about a civic reception for Cov rugby’s brilliant League-winning year?

And one for Mark Robins’ Sky Blues if they win promotion next month? There wasn’t an invite after last year’s Checkatrade Trophy win at Wembley.
