LETTERS: Your discussion from around the city in this week's Observer

Another great weekend in Coventry with Motofest and the amazing performance by the Rolling Stones. But we should also remember those who died in the London Bridge and Borough Market attack and the many more who were injured a year ago. We must pay tribute to the bravery of

our emergency services and those who intervened and came to the aid of others. Given their bravery it is real shame 12 months on from this tragic event Lush have targeted every single police officer in the UK with a vile and ill thoughtout campaign (Paid to Lie #SpyCops

campaign).

I hope the Coventry store isn’t taking part in it. If it is, I hope Coventry residents find somewhere else to shop.

Myton volunteers are great contributors During Volunteers’ Week (1st – 7th June), The Myton Hospices would like to say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our organisation. At Myton we have more than 1,000 volunteers who give their time to enable

us to continue to be there for people with terminal and life limiting illnesses and their families in Coventry and Warwickshire when they need us most. Volunteers support Myton in a variety of different ways; from donating their time to help with our fundraising efforts,

volunteering in our shops, assisting with our frontline patient services and taking

on roles such as receptionist and administrator – to name a few! By donating their time, skills, compassion and kindness, our volunteers make such a difference to the services and

experience that we are able to provide to patients and their families. In the last year, volunteers have contributed over 155,000 hours to Myton, which is estimated to have added a value of over £1.5million to our organisation – a staggering amount! We are incredibly thankful to our volunteers for the time they give, and the dedication and passion that they bring. We couldn’t do it without them! We would also love to hear from new people who would like to join our team.

I occasionally cycle into the city centre and use the lockup cycle cages at the rear of the British Heart Foundation shop in Market Way, next to the disabled car parking area. I am appalled at the filthy mess in and around these lockup cycle cages, hundreds of cigarette ends and rubbish strewn inside the cages and around the area.

Two of the cages had someone’s personal belongings locked inside. Will all the pomp and ceremony splashed around regarding the so-called City of Culture and the millions of pounds

that will be splashed around for this events, it’s time that some basic housekeeping be put in place in cleaning up such dilapidated filthy areas in the city.

I noted that the university is selling off its unwanted houses for students. A good thing, but can it not somehow be stipulated that they are returned to family housing to help people to be able to get on the property ladder, not to allow “usually” unscrupulous landlords

buying them up to continue blighting the neighbourhoods with their run down properties.
