A WOMAN who survived a massive cancerous tumour and her Rugby village will celebrate 70 years of NHS service with a street party to raise funds for Coventry’s University Hospital.

Newton will be calling on the whole community when it hosts an NHS 70th anniversary party this Saturday and Sunday (July 7 and 8).

All donations from the two-day festival will go to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) Charity.

After receiving life-saving treatment from the hospital for a cancerous tumour, June Ford has organised the weekend as a statement of her personal gratitude.

Surgeon Christopher Grocock and his team at UHCW successfully removed a 17 and a half pound tumour as well as fluid which weighed around 41 pounds.

June is a former process chemist and attributes her illness to being exposed to hazardous toxins over the years,

At 62-years-old, June, along with fellow Newtonites, wants to give something back to the NHS and UHCW through a long weekend of festivities.

June, said: “I’ve loved my job, it’s taken me around the UK, but in resolving problems it potentially exposed me to all kinds of hazardous substances in dangerous circumstances which undoubtedly has lowered my life expectancy as a result.

“In later years my career leaned more towards risk elimination, control and education embracing healthy workplace initiatives which coincidentally is currently focusing on dangerous substances.

“Since having my treatment at UHCW I have not looked back and just feel so positive about life that I wanted to give something back.

“It’s not just me which the hospital has helped, pretty much everyone in this village has been helped at some point by UHCW.”

Jo O’Sullivan, head of UHCW Charity, added: “Residents of Newton are amazing and on behalf of everyone at the charity, we cannot thank them enough. The money Newton raises will go towards enhancing our cancer services for patients and their families.”

The festivities will start in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, July 7 with live music and a barbecue.

Followed by a family fun event commencing at 2pm on Sunday when the villagers will display their green fingered creativity with open gardens and a scarecrow competition.

To complete the weekend there will be children’s activities, table top sales and refreshments.
