MAJOR traffic improvements have begun at key parts of the A45 in Coventry.
Coventry City Council is carrying out signal upgrade works on the A45 from Bathway Road to Sir Henry Parkes Road in Canley and making changes to the A45 Pickford Way roundabout near Allesley Park.
The projects are going ahead after nearly £1million funding was awarded from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP).
Work at Bathway Road has already begun and will continue on a rolling programme until the end of September.
The scheme involves installing the Split Cycle and Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT) to link nine signalised junctions and two signalised pedestrian crossings over 5.5 km.
The four-signal junction will also be upgraded and a system that uses detectors and signal controllers will be installed.
The final piece of the jigsaw will involve adding bus priority measures at five signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings.
The other major roadworks are to the existing roundabout at the A45 Pickford Way which is to be altered to provide additional pedestrian crossings across the entry and exit slip roads.
Signals will also be installed at two sections of the roundabout, CCTV cameras are to be fitted and resurfacing work will be completed.
There will also be minor work to install and upgrade pedestrian footpaths.
Coun Jayne Innes, cabinet member for city services at Coventry council, said these are two important traffic infrastructure projects which will increase pedestrian safety at busy junctions.
She said: “The completion of the work will mean all the signalised junctions including pedestrian crossings will be linked from Bathway Road to the Broad Lane junction on the A45 corridor which will be a great benefit to pedestrians.
“It will also help vehicles to travel through the junction more smoothly and freely to minimise queues which is another positive impact.
“There will also be some delays to drivers while work is carried out at Pickford Way which is due to start next month.
“But the short-term disruption will be of great benefit to passengers and motorists alike once it is completed by the autumn.”
Signs will be installed a week in advance of the start of work at each junction from Bathway Road to Sir Henry Parkes Road while some lane closures are expected during the modifications to the Pickford Way roundabout.
