'Poetry jukebox' coming to Kenilworth station

Coventry Editorial 8th Sep, 2018   0

A POET is set to wax lyrical at Kenilworth Station.

Matt Black from Leamington is spreading the spoken and written word as far as he can ahead of Kenilworth Arts Festival.

Between September 11 and 20 he is setting up a home made ‘poetry jukebox’ at the station.

It will see Matt, who is Derbyshire poet laureate, read poetry to waiting passengers – and those in a rush to catch their train will not miss out, as they can take a short story with them to read.

Matt said: “I will write a story or poem to give to passengers which will be short enough to finish reading before they arrive in Coventry or Leamington.

“It’s all about entertaining passengers and travellers by being the station’s poet in residence.”

He plans to use travel and his home town as inspiration for the poems and stories.

And Matt is also planning to share his passion for books even further – by holding pop-up storytelling sessions in Abbey Fields and doing door-to-door condensed reads of classics by the likes of Dickens – in under two minutes.

He is also hoping to visit retirement homes and collect stories from Kenilworth residents.

He added: “I am a local poet and love finding new and exciting ways to encourage reading and writing.”

Kenilworth Arts Festival run from September 20 to 29.
