THE WAVE – this is the name of Coventry’s new £36million waterpark.
The major attraction is beginning to take shape as construction continues on the former Spire House site in the city centre.
It is on course to open in spring next year, despite fears over building delays.
The council says the name has been selected because it’s short, memorable, descriptive and fits with the design of the building.
The logo will also feature a spiral letter ‘W’ – symbolising a twisting flume ending in a splash of water, the council says.
Cabinet member for public health and sport Kamran Caan said: “I’m delighted we can reveal the name of our fantastic waterpark.
“The Wave is the perfect name and in keeping with the design of the building, which is eye catching and memorable.
“Coventry’s waterpark, The Wave, is unique – because no other city has this kind of facility in the heart of a city centre, so it seems only right that we have a unique name for it too.
“It’s a name that’s easy to remember, hints at what’s inside and I like the way a slide and a splash have been incorporated into the design.
“Work is really charging on and if you walk past the site you can see the six different slides have now been almost fully fitted.”
It will feature a new four-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a 120-station fitness suite, squash courts, a dance studio and a day spa.
But the most eagerly anticipated attraction will be the waterpark’s nine flume slides.
These include the ‘Navigator’ – a waterpark version of a roller coaster which has both uphill and downhill drops in a tube.
There will also be a ‘Speed Slide’ – featuring a drop of 20 metres – and a whirlpool style ride with a plunge pool.
Each ride will be complemented by light and sound features for an immersive ride experience.
Coun Caan added: “The waterpark includes real thrill rides for the most adventurous. A splash pad area with jets, tipping buckets and smaller accessible slides for toddlers, easy access areas for people with mobility issues and a wave pool and lazy river.
“Working with a group of local young people has also ensured we will have one of the most accessible waterparks in the UK. “Parents will be able to sit poolside and enjoy a coffee or cup of tea while their children enjoy the water.
“All of this in time to celebrate City of Sport in 2019.”
The council transferred around £500,000 intended to develop the area around the park to the Upper Precinct project in July.
This sparked concerns development of the new park may be placed on hold.
But a council spokesperson said it will not delay the completion of the new attraction.
