Leamington's House of Fraser spared the axe

Coventry Editorial 10th Oct, 2018   0

HOUSE of Fraser in Leamington has been saved.

It has been confirmed the store will remain open after high street pressures threatened the future of the chain.

The department store on the Parade was one of 31 set to be closed in a bid to secure the company – meaning some 200 job losses.

There was some hope when Sports Direct bosses swooped in to buy the struggling chain after investor Hamley’s owner C banner – which originally earmarked the Leamington branch for closure – pulled out.

The sale included all its UK stores, the branding and all of its stock.

Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western has been supporting the store since news broke of the possible closure in June.

He said: “Since the takeover of House of Fraser was announced I have worked tirelessly to secure the future of the Leamington store and I was obviously delighted when they told me it would remain open.

“Over the past months I have met with House of Fraser management and as well as the landlord in London to try and bring about a deal. It says a lot about the attraction of our area and a Leamington in particular as a shopping destination. Finally, I’m sure the employees will be assured by the news and for whom the past few months have been particularly difficult.”
