A HOST of stars including X-Factor’s Rak-Su kicked off the festive period in style at Coventry’s Christmas lights switch-on.

Thousands braved the cold to see the Lord Mayor John Blundell along with Santa and the members of Rak-Su hit the switch in Broadgate, city centre.

Reigning champions of television talent show The X Factor, Rak-Su, warmed the crowds with an all-action performance.

Many stayed for the entire proceedings starting at 5pm until the switch on at around 7.30pm, with Coventry City Council eager to make it the city’s biggest celebration yet.

Other notable guests included Coventry singer Emily Jane Brooks, who brought her nostalgic wartime-style choir, the D-Day Darlings, back to the city for a special performance after their run to the final of Britain’s Got Talent.

There was more home-grown talent on offer with Charlie Healy, Elite Dance, Coventry’s own Voice Squad plus a performance by Coventry Music’s Sound Lab project featuring young Coventry musicians.

And to celebrate Coventry’s status as European City of Sport for 2019, Coventry’s very own medal winning Paralympian Kare Adenegan, was also recognised for her sporting achievements and her recent capture of the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
