A POLICE officer is ‘lucky to be alive’ after sustaining painful injuries after being hit by a car in Coventry.
West Midlands Police said he was hit by the car after stopping a silver Ford Transit van, suspected of being involved in a robbery, on Copperfield Road, Coventry, at 4.15pm on Saturday (March 30).
He sustained nasty leg injuries.
A colleague of the injured officer, and chairman of the West Midlands Police federation, Richard Cooke, shared images of his bruises on Twitter.
He also called for people to protect the police with incidents of officers being injured in the line of duty becoming more common.
He Tweeted: “Been speaking with a colleague who was run down by car investigating a robbery in Coventry.
“He is lucky to be alive!
“He’s now resting up, but in much discomfort and pain.
“NOT a one off – vehicles used as weapons against officers is becoming regular. #ProtectTheProtectors”
As we reported, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said on Monday: “While at the scene dealing with the incident, an officer was hit by a silver Vauxhall Insignia. A police car was also damaged.
“The occupants of the Insignia fled the scene. Copperfield Road was closed for several hours to allow for the vehicles to be recovered.
