A SUSPECTED burglary attempt sparked a police chase through Coventry which caused a four-car collision.

The crash on Ansty Road caused traffic and delays while shocked onlookers saw four men attempt to flee police.

One witness described the scene on Facebook as ‘mayhem’.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of a burglary in progress in Momus Boulevard, Coventry, shortly after 3pm today (May 9).

“On arrival, four men were disturbed and attempted to flee the scene in a car.

“Following a pursuit, the car hit railings and three stationary vehicles on Ansty Road, Coventry.

“The men attempted to run from the scene, but were swiftly tracked down by the officers near to Crowmere Road and arrested on suspicion of burglary and driving offences.

“No-one was injured in the collision.”

Police issued an update which reads: “We arrested four teenagers yesterday minutes after they were suspected of hurling breeze blocks through the patio window of a Coventry home in a botched burglary.

“Officers were directed to an address in Momus Boulevard, Stoke, just after 3pm thanks to a member of the public who dialled 999 to report a break-in.

“It’s understood offenders scaled a rear gate and smashed a patio window to gain entry but were thwarted by a locked internal door.

“They fled to a waiting getaway car, a Peugeot 206 parked in Bromley Drive, but our response cops quickly picked up the vehicle and pulled it over in Ansty Road.

“Four male youths – aged 17, two aged 16 and a 15-year-old – were arrested running from the car and remain in police custody on suspicion of burglary.

“A great arrest and thanks to the member of the public whose swift emergency call enabled us to get officers to the scene quickly.”
