Demolition of Coventry city centre tower block set to take six months

THE DEMOLITION of the Coventry Point city centre tower block is set to take more than six months once works begin in October.

As we reported, the initial works to demolish the bridge between the Barracks car park and the tower block in Market Way will begin today (August 9).

A Coventry City Council spokesperson has now told us: “I can confirm demolition of the tower blocks to Coventry Point will not commence until early October 2019.

“This will be a slow top-down deconstruction process from roof level to ground level with completion circa end June 2020.

“The demolition works this weekend are restricted to the rear of Coventry Point.

“That is, the removal of the foot bridge at high level between Coventry Point and the roof deck of Barracks multi-storey car park.

“Part of the three-storey brick extension will also be demolished.”

Initial works beginning today and are due to be completed by Monday (August 12).

Cabinet Member for Jobs and Regeneration Councillor Jim O’Boyle said: “It’s great that we’re able to see works happening around the city centre.

“In the past few months we’ve seen the former Nationwide bank demolition, which has opened up the view between Hertford Street and Broadgate, as well as the opening of The Wave.

“The demolition of the bridge between the car park and Coventry Point is just the start of the work to redevelop and improve the area and to open up Market Way.”

The works this weekend are all happening at the same time to cause minimum disruption to visitors, workers and shops in the area, the Coventry council says.
