A-level results day: Coventry and Warwickshire students learn their fate

THE ANXIOUS wait is over for thousands of Coventry sixth formers who are ready to learn their A-level results.

Students are heading into schools today (August 15) to pick up their grades, and we will provide coverage as we hear results.

Many will be hoping to secure a place at their desired university, or to continue their studies on the path to top jobs.

Schools, sixth forms and colleges will be aiming for a 100 per cent pass rate – with many of their students seeking those coveted top grades.




Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) Academy Coventry:

WMG Academy Coventry is today celebrating its best ever A-level maths and BTEC engineering results.


The Mitchell Avenue academy achieved a rate of 81 per cent A* to C in maths A-level and 96 per cent Merit or above in BTEC engineering.

Of all A-level maths students, 58 per cent achieved at least a grade B, with 75 per cent of further maths students attaining A* to B.

In engineering, 100 per cent of students passed, with 91 per cent achieving at least one Distinction and 78 per cent achieving at least three Distinctions.

Matt Brady, principal of WMG Academy Coventry, said: “We are absolutely delighted with this year’s results and extremely proud of all our students who have worked incredibly hard for two years to achieve such high standards.

“This year’s post-16 results show that we are succeeding in the most challenging academic subjects as well as the career-focused technical subjects, all of which see our students securing highly sought places at top universities and positions within national and global companies.”

Blue Coat Church of England School: 

Blue Coat sixth form students excelled in their A-level and BTEC examinations.

Of the 357 exams sat, almost half resulted in a Grade B or above, with well over three quarters C and above.

There were some admirable individual achievements with 21 students achieving at A, A, B or equivalent, or better.

Headteacher Mrs Shelley said: “We expected some excellent results from this cohort of students, and we were not disappointed. It is wonderful to see so many of our students achieve or exceed expectations.”

Head of sixth form Miss Davoile said: “Students and staff alike have been duly rewarded for all their hard work.

“There is a tremendous work ethic in the Sixth Form at Blue Coat, which has resulted in so many dreams being fulfilled.”

Among numerous individual successes, Nikhil Aggarwal stood out after achieving four A*, and Maisie Ferris who achieved A* and one A.

President Kennedy School: 

President Kennedy School students are celebrating a record number of A* and A grades.

About 20 per cent of students achieved A*, A – and 100 per cent of students have been placed at universities of their choice.

Star student Josh Capewell achieved an astonishing four A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, EPQ and an A in Physics. He will be studying Physics and Astronomy at Durham University.

Student Maryam Qutbuddin gained three A grades in English Literature, History and Psychology and will be going to University College London to study History, Politics and Economics.

King Henry VIII School: 

King Henry VIII School has reported a strong set of A-level exam results.

Incredibly, 24 students, almost 25 per cent of the year group, achieved A* or A grades in all of their subjects.

More than a third of all A-levels were awarded the top grades of A* or A and almost two thirds were graded A*, A, or B.

Among these figures are some outstanding individual performances with 12 students securing A* grades in at least two of their subjects.

This includes Eniola Awodiya who will now study Medicine at Oxford University and Josh Simpson, whose 3 A* grades will take him to Warwick University to study Mathematics.

Headmaster Jason Slack said: ‘This academic success has been gained against the background of many other achievements from an extremely talented year group.”

Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School: 

Sixth-formers at Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School in Coventry achieved a stellar set of A-level results this year – with two achieving places at Oxford University.

The school, which is part of the Romero Catholic Academy, achieved the highest proportion of A* to A grades ever, with eight departments in the school achieving 100 per cent A* to C grades.

Franceska Tchapdeu and Daisy Meade did especially well, with both earning places at Oxford.

Franceska is going on to study Medicine at Oxford after receiving three A*s in Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

She said: “I’m honestly overwhelmed with my results – I don’t know how I got an A* in Maths because the exam this year was so hard.”

And Daisy will go onto study Economics and Management at Cambridge University after achieving an A* in English, and two As in Maths and Economics.

Principal Tom Leverage said: “Our students have picked up excellent results this year right across the board, from our students who have taken traditional A-levels through to students who have taken vocational courses.

“Our students should be very proud of what they’ve achieved, and we wish all of them the very best as they leave Cardinal Wiseman.”

Grace Academy Coventry:

Grace Academy Coventry is celebrating a rise of over 16 per cent in the number of students achieving at least three A-level passes.

Among the performance highlights in individual subjects were a 100 per cent pass rate in Art, Photography, English, PE, and Physics, as well as across all the academy’s BTEC subjects.

High performing student Murtaza Hazareh, who achieved two A*s and two As in Maths, Biology, Physics and Chemistry, securing a place at Queen Mary’s University to study medicine, said:

“I’m pleased that all my hard work is evidenced by these results and I am proud of my achievements. I am now going to be studying medicine at Queen Mary’s University. Thank you to all the teachers for their moral support.”

Assistant headteacher Iain Green added: “A huge congratulations to our students who secured places at university and opened a door to a new career.

“We have done a lot of work this year to help maximise potential and performance and it’s been a real team effort.

“It’s great to see so many students go on to achieve academically and personally.”

Cardinal Newman Catholic School Coventry: 

Students at Cardinal Newman are celebrating some impressive A-level results, with the vast majority of students securing their first-choice destinations – including places at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

Headteacher Marina Kelly said: “We are very proud of all our students and their wonderful successes.

“Students have worked tremendously hard for these results and deserve to celebrate as they now go off to destinations of their choice to pursue a wide range of courses and careers.”

Individual successes include Agnieska Niewiadomska who achieved A* in Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics securing a place at Cambridge University to study Computer Science.

And Zipporah Englebert who achieved an A* in both English Language and Literature and Philosophy and Ethics and an A in Psychology and has secured a place at Leicester University to study Law.

Head of post-16, Christopher Courtney, said: “I am delighted that so many of our students will now be able to go on to study at the universities of their choice, having met or exceeded their individual targets.”

Sidney Stringer Academy: 

The Primrose Hill Street school students and staff have celebrated another set of post-16 results.

The school reported improvements on last year in all of the main measures for A-level and BTEC subjects.

At A -level it saw a 9 per cent improvement in the percentage of higher grades, with 44 per cent of students achieving A* to B results – up from 35 per cent last year.

There was also improvement in BTEC grades, with a 6% rise in the distinction-star to merit higher grades.

A spokesperson said: “We wish all of our 16+ students receiving results this summer the best of luck as they head off to university or the world of work. We are all very proud of you!”

Ash Green School: 

The Ash Green Lane school near Keresley End  – which opened it’s sixth form centre in 2012 – celebrated the best A-level and BTEC results in the its history – with students achieving an average of at least one grade higher in their 2019 exam results than in the previous year.

Subjects that excelled include Further Maths, which saw 100 per cent A* to A grades achieved – while 100 per cent A* to C grades were achieved in Art & Design, Graphics, History and Psychology.

The most notable individual achievements came from 18-year-old Lewis Melvin, who achieved grades A* (Maths), A* (Physics) and A* (Further Maths). He will be going on to read Further Maths at Oxford University, after giving up a family holiday in the October half term to prepare for his entry exam.

Lauren Cox, 18, one of Ash Green School’s bursary students, worked exceptionally hard across Year 13 to achieve grades A (Biology), A (History) and B (Chemistry) – and will go on to read Veterinary Medicine at Nottingham University.

Amy Sibley head of Sixth Form & vice principal said: “The 2019 exams have seen our best post results as a school ever, with large numbers of top level grades and nearly 95 per cent getting their first choice of university destinations – including our first Oxford University students.”

“Ash Green School strives to make everyday extraordinary for all our young people,” said principal Harry French, “but our exiting sixth form students this year have excelled in their exams and we are all incredibly proud of their academic achievements.”

Warwickshire results: 

Campion School: 

Campion School saw 55 per cent of students achieving A* and A grades.

Top marks went to George Cowgill who achieved an A* and two As, and Deniz Gungor who scooped A*, A and B and is now heading to St Andrew’s University.

Headteacher Jassa Panesa said: “Well done to all our pupils in Year 13 and a big thank you to all the staff and parents who have supported us during this year of expansion and building work.

“Our students have built upon their successes at GCSE and have not only achieved highly but also developed into well rounded young adults.”

The Kingsley School: 

Girls at The Kingley School saw a third of all grades passed with A* to A results.

Headteacher Heather Owens said: “Our aim is for our leavers to be strong independent young women who have good character and confidence – these are just as important today as qualifications.

“We are as proud as ever of our excellent results so I am thrilled with our girls and their successes today – they are all now on their varied pathways to achieving their life goals and fulfilling futures thanks to their hard work and the whole staff team at Kingsley.”

Warwick School: 

Warwick School students were also celebrating, with 48 per cent of results at A* to A grade.

High achievers included Frank Fan, William Feasey, Zakary Milstein, George Holding and David Yates, who all received four A* grades.

Headteacher Deneal Smith said: “The achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication of the boys and their teachers. These results will see boys progressing to a range of competitive courses, for many at their first choice university, and we wish them all every success for the future.”

Princethorpe College: 

Princethorpe College saw 30 per cent of students scoop A* or A grades. There were 17 who walked away with three or more A* to A results.

Headteacher Ed Hester said: “These students have worked so hard and we are incredibly proud of their achievements. We are proud of their academic achievements, but these students have many other fine qualities: – kindness, respect and a strong sense of right and wrong, which will be tremendously important for them as they move on to the next phase of their lives. We congratulate them all on their success and wish them the very best for the future.”

Warwickshire College: 

Warwickshire College’s Leamington site saw a 98 per cent pass rate – with all students passing its biology, chemistry, English, physics and maths courses.

Vice principal Helen Kinghorn said: “It is fantastic to see the hard work of our students pay off and we would like to congratulate them all on their A level achievements.

“We are very proud of each and every one of them and these results are testament to the hard work put in by staff and students over the last year.”

Southam College: 

And Southam College is celebrating top results with lots of students passing with A* to B grades.

Daniel Ridges and Beth Edwards came top of the class with two A*s and an A grades.

Headteacher Ranjit Samra said: “These results are testament to the hardwork of students and staff and the support that parents and carers provide. I want congratulate everyone involved and wish them every success for the future.”
