SKY Blues manager Mark Robins said the past week provided the biggest learning curve for his side, after a 3-3 draw at Oxford United followed on from the midweek Carabao Cup defeat against Watford.
Coventry seemed to be on the road to victory when Callum O’Hare struck in stoppage time to put the visitors 3-2 up, after goals from Zain Westbrooke and Matt Godden were cancelled out by Oxford, but were denied by Elliott Moore’s 94th-minute equaliser.
It was the second 3-3 away draw that the Sky Blues have been involved in in the space of two weeks, but the point means that Coventry remain unbeaten in League One.
Robins believes the result was one that flattered his side, but is happy to take a useful point from the Kassam Stadium.
“I thought they were better, two-nil up probably flattered us a little bit. Having said that, the two goals we scored were good goals,” he said.
“We kept them at bay, even though they had quite a lot of ball in our penalty area from wide areas, we dealt with the crosses pretty well until Franky’s [Fankaty Dabo] own goal.
“I’m relieved with a point because I thought we were poor, I thought we started off okay, we were passing okay.
“They’re a good side, make no mistake about it, they’ve got good players, the way they play stretches you at times, but we were our own worst enemy.”
Assessing the opening month of the season, the Coventry manager says it is so far, so good, but hopes his side can cut out a number of the errors that have hindered them at times.
“It’s been a productive month, a positive month, and certainly with eight games in the month and our only defeat is against a Premier League team,” said Robins.
“We can come away and say it’s a decent start, on to September and see what we can do, we’ve got some really tough games coming up.
“We kept doing the same things, we’ve just got to learn.
“There’s a lot of young players in our team that are naïve to the game at the minute.
“I think if we can learn from this then it will be a big help.
“This is the biggest game we can learn from, from the ones we’ve played so far, other than the game on Tuesday night.”
Coventry next host Walsall in the EFL Trophy at St Andrew’s on Tuesday night (7.45pm).
