SCHOOL pupils who petitioned for road safety measures have got their wish – after a pedestrian refuge was installed.
Tile Hill Lane, Tile Hill, Coventry now has a pedestrian refuge to aid crossing the road, and a widened carriageway.
Students from West Coventry Academy had signed a petition, which was heard at a full Coventry City Council meeting two years ago.
Labour councillor Patricia Hetherton, cabinet member for city services, said: “Ensuring our roads are safe, particularly outside our schools, remains a top priority for us.
“The new layout of Tile Hill Lane means the road is safer for students to cross, particularly during the opening and closing times of the school.
“Our Highways team listened closely to the concerns of the pupils and they were a delight to work with.”
Labour councillor Lynnette Kelly, who supported the petition, said: “I’m very pleased to see these new measures be installed. The lack of safe crossing has been an issue for a while and I’m glad that the Council has responded to their concerns.”
The council says the measures are also intended to improve driver behaviour and reduce traffic speeds, particularly at peak traffic times.
The bus stop opposite the school gates has been moved west, towards Station Avenue, is response to safety concerns about walking between the two previous bus stops at peak times.
