A FORMER army ambulance driver celebrated her centenary at home with a party and a glass of sherry.

Gladys Muriel Halford saw in her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at Albemarle Rest Home in Leamington.

The great-grandmother of six was born in Coventry and joined the army in 1940, driving trucks, cars and ambulances. Just after the D Day landings she went to Belgium where she stayed until the end of the war.

The mum of two then returned to Coventry where she was a housewife, later in life taking a job at the Coventry and Warwickshire hospital records office where she worked for 15 years. She also moved to Leamington.

A spokesman from Albemarle said: “We celebrated her 100th birthday with a small party including sherry, her favourite tipple. Muriel’s family were also there to help us celebrate this momentous milestone.”
