Village fury as 'fake council letters' alleges hotel in Coventry accommodates 'sex offenders'

A COVENTRY councillor has confirmed police are investigating the posting of ‘fake council letters’ in Allesley warning of sex offenders staying at a hotel.

The notices purport to warn locals about residents staying at a hotel which is used to shelter the homeless from coronavirus.

Allesley residents have reported anonymous letters put up in the village stating “sex offenders live in the Allesley Hotel. Be aware.”

One Allesley resident said: “There have been a load of signs put up around the village stating that sex offenders are staying at the Allesley Village Hotel.

“They are not signed, they do not have the authority of a known organisation, they do not say where the information came from. They are, therefore, just based on hearsay and rumour creating scaremongering.”

Responding to the posters, Councillor Tariq Khan, cabinet member for housing, said: “As part of the ongoing COVID-19 emergency, the government requires all councils to accommodate all rough sleepers and people living in night-shelter type provision in their area. Coventry City Council is currently accommodating these people across four different establishments in the city, including the Allesley Hotel.

“I can confirm the letters posted in Allesley with council logos on are fake. The police have been informed and are investigating. I can also confirm there are no known sex offenders housed in the Allesley Hotel.

“At a difficult time for so many people affected by the challenges of coronavirus, it is deeply disappointing that someone has taken the time to carry out such an act that takes away from the many acts of kindness that are happening across the city.”
