Bikes seized as teens arrested in police action against 'reckless riders'

TEEN bikers ‘riding recklessly’ have been arrested in Coventry.

Police say they detained a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old in a crackdown on nuisance off-road bikers in Wood End and Stoke Aldermoor.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We seized five off-road bikes after responding to community concerns about reckless riders in Coventry.

“Officers took action yesterday (April 19) following complaints of bike groups gathering and causing a nuisance on grassland, canal towpaths, shopping areas and streets despite government restrictions.

“The joint team approach saw traffic and neighbourhood officers swoop with the support of the dog unit and police helicopter.

“As part of the force’s ongoing crackdown on anti-social and dangerous riding we pursued suspects who tried to make off.

“Two boys, aged 16 and 17, were detained on suspicion of driving offences.

“A 24-year-old man was summonsed to appear at court at a later date.”

Sergeant Liam Hemmings, from the West Midlands Traffic Unit, said: “It is completely unacceptable to ride dangerously and anti-socially at any time, but even more so when people are being asked to stay at home in the fight against coronavirus.

“The quieter roads and open spaces are not a green-light for irresponsible actions and we will continue to respond to the concerns of our communities in tackling the nuisance.”
