Job Shop reopens in Coventry to help beat coronavirus joblessness

Coventry Editorial 20th Aug, 2020   0

COVENTRY’S Job Shop is set to re-open next week (August 24) following its closure since the beginning of lockdown in late March.

Help is available at the Job Shop, in Bull Yard, for the unemployed, those looking for a career change or guidance for training.

To begin with, only customers with pre-booked appointments will be able to visit. There will be strict measures in place to ensure social distancing is followed and that the environment is safe for those seeking support with employment, education or training.

Coventry Council said the Job Shop has also begun offering its services digitally, making use of Microsoft Teams to help people with creating CVs, application processes, interview techniques and exclusive job vacancies. Online support will continue to be available.

The Employer Hub, which is part of the service that The Job Shop offers, works directly with employers and is also continuing to offer its services digitally. Since 2016 they have filled over 10,000 positions within Coventry and Warwickshire and offer free high-level employment support throughout the recruitment process, which includes assistance in job creation, job descriptions, advertising positions and arranging final interviews and work trials.

Coun Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs and regeneration, said: “COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on lots of people and businesses. There has been a large-scale impact on employment, which unfortunately has resulted in many people being placed on furlough, being made redundant or losing their jobs.

“The Job Shop reopening its doors is really going to help local people get back into work. The team has worked hard to provide services through lockdown – but its great news that they will be open again as we work to get the economy moving.”

Coun Kevin Maton, cabinet member for education and skills, added: “This pandemic has shown us more than ever how vital it is for people to be able to access the right skills and training to help people find work. The Job Shop works with training providers from all across the city and many of the courses available are offered flexibly from the comfort of your own home.”

“Whether you’re looking to brush up on skills you already have or learn something new, if you’re unemployed it’s a great time to consider gaining a qualification or skill which could help you find work.”
