Wasps star Jack Willis has plumb job in the pipeline after retirement

Jack Willis is on course to become a qualified plumber as the entrepreneurial England prospect plans for life when his professional rugby career is over.

Willis has made a turbo-charged start to the resumed Gallagher Premiership season with two blockbuster displays in Wasps’ back row that were both witnessed by Eddie Jones.

The 23-year-old had been picked by Jones for the 2018 tour to South Africa until a serious knee injury cruelly intervened and, once overcome, that was compounded by an ankle issue that required surgery.

The lengthy spells in rehabilitation convinced Willis that even at his age he needed to be drawing up a plan for retirement.

“It probably hit home when I was injured that rugby isn’t going to last forever,” said Willis, who is expected to be involved in England’s autumn series.

“To have something outside of rugby is crucial so my brother (Wasps team-mate Tom) and I took on the evening plumbing course with Warwickshire College Group. It was a great thing to do.

“Alex Lundberg, one of my best mates, had to retire so he and I had set up a business in the property world. It’s always good to have that other focus and it’s something I’ve really been enjoying.

“I put everything into my training when I’m here and then do my analysis after training.

“Once that’s done, I can get into the car and just switch off when I’m home by putting the business hat on.

“I fitted a kitchen tap for my parents last week, funnily enough. Not sure if they’ll be calling me back – it hasn’t leaked yet so fingers crossed!

“We’re waiting for our results next month but it’s all looking good. That will be for the diploma.

“Now if we want to do the work experience side of things and get the NVQ, then we can do that. One step closer!”
