Several city arts companies boosted by Covid cultural grants

SEVEN arts companies in Coventry will receive up to £15,000 a year in grants to help with running costs during the pandemic and encourage more people across the city get involved in cultural activities.

Theatre Absolute, Open Theatre, Coventry Biennial, Tin Music and Arts, Talking Birds, Highly Sprung and Imagineer Productions have been awarded support towards their core costs over the next two years under a programme of grants which aim to provide a strong legacy for the UK City of Culture.

They each met the council’s criteria for a “high-quality artistic programme, underpinned by strong business plans for the period”.

The funding will also help these organisations reach out to residents from diverse backgrounds, people with disabilities and those living in areas of Coventry where participation in culture is currently low.

Coun David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: ”We are a city full of leading arts and cultural organisations. The current climate is a difficult one for the sector this funding will help seven organisations to play a full part in the exciting years ahead and plan with confidence.

“These investments will support the organisations to engage people from across the city and are linked to clear plans for building capacity and creating stronger cultural businesses for the future.

“Our priority is to ensure a significant legacy from our year as City of Culture. The programme of grant funding is all about reaching residents who are less likely to get involved in culture; drawing them into the cultural life of Coventry.”

Sarah Worth, Executive Director of Highly Sprung has said “This is amazing news we are utterly thrilled and delighted to have the support of the Council over the next two years!”

In addition to this programme of grants, the council has committed to a six monthly call for projects seeking funding. It announced its first awards late last year.
